Making conscious connections with every encounter, every experience that life brings our way, we have an opportunity to grow and evolve. The choice is truly ours.
To grow and evolve, we must be willing to own our reactions and be curious about the situations that elicit an emotional response within us (aka emotional triggers).
It is easy to say someone or something made me feel a certain way, putting the blame elsewhere. This mindset puts us in victim mode which is disempowering and keeps us operating in a negative energy space, repeating patterns and behaviors that are less than ideal.
When we become curious about why we had an emotional response in the first place, we become willing to explore the origins of our emotions, which leads to a deeper understanding of what makes us tick.
We begin to make conscious connections between the situations we experience, the emotional response we have, and the underlying reasons that are associated with it all. This process is invaluable in our ability to heal from our past experiences (and yes, we all have them) and to break the cycle of repeated behaviors that keep us from growing and evolving.
In a recent blog post, I provided insights into how to be with your feelings and emotions. Here, I invite you to take things a little deeper. Are you open to it?
Meditate on Emotion
This is an invitation to spend time with your emotion, be curious and learn more. Be open to the exploration and what you find.
Sacred Space
- Find a quiet space where you will not be interrupted. If you live with others, be sure to let them know that you need this time alone.
- Have a journal and pen nearby.
- Get comfortable. Grab whatever you need to be comfortable in your space, a blanket, pillows, crystals, soft relaxing music etc.
- Turn off all of your devices so you will not be interrupted…this is super important. If your device goes off, it will pull you out of this experience.
Meditate
Read through this meditation process first, so you become familiar with it, prior to actually doing it.
Sit in a comfortable seated position, close your eyes and take 3 slow, deep breaths. With each breath, bring your awareness into your body, feeling your breath expanding deeper and deeper into every part of your body.
Settling into your normal breathing pattern, place your awareness into your body, identify what it is you are feeling in this moment. Trust the first feeling that comes to mind and state what it is you are feeling.
“I feel _____________________.”
Continue to feel into that feeling for as long as you need, while continuing to breathe.
Is there anything you notice about the feeling; location in the body, the intensity of it or any other visual aspects that come into your awareness. Continue breathing into that and be curious.
Now, take a moment to reflect on this emotion and its connection to your past.
When was the last time you felt this emotion? Trust the first thing that comes to mind.
Take a deep breath and sit with that for a moment. What were you experiencing at that time?
Continue breathing into that experience for as long as you need.
When you are ready and the process feels complete, begin to deepen your breaths, bringing awareness back into your surroundings. Wiggle your fingers and your toes. Take a nice full body stretch and when you’re ready, take time to write about your experience and your findings.
Integration
Take some time to process through your written findings and the experience you had with the meditation. What did you learn about yourself during the process that can help you grow from this experience?
Making conscious connections between what we are experiencing today and what we have experienced in the past, provides insight and understanding into what we have the power to change within our own life. From this empowered place of living, we are able to drive deep transformational change.
